Google="SOMETIMES, FOOD LABELS LIE,=Google Search (239,000 Hits - 01.26.09)

USA Today, 01.21.09, "Experts say dangerous U. S. produced foods are comparatively few, but producers have been known to practice "economic adulteration" - adding a little to their bottom line by padding, thinning or substituting something cheap for something expensive." For example, Seafood -

"Fish is the most frequently faked food Americans buy. In the business, it's called "species adulteration" - Selling a cheaper fish such as pen-raised Atlantic Salmon as wild Alaskan Salmon. Of 23 supposedly wild-caught salmon bought nationwide in 2005-2006, only 10 were "wild". Chicago Sun Times tested fish at 17 sushi restaurants and found the "red snapper" was mostly tilapia. U. of NC scientists found 77% of fish labeled "red snapper" were actually something else.

Another example in our search for well identified foods to lighten the load on our Health System:- Extra Virgin Olive Oil. "It's one of the most frequently counterfeited food products," says Martin Stitsman, FDA's consumer safety officer for edible oils.......

Hey, shouts your narrator, who's in charge? Federal Trade Commission states that they do not resolve individual consumer complaints, and FDA's safety officer is simply reporting widespread adulteration of olive oils! Where does the buck stop?

YELLOW PROFESSIONALISM (YP)

The New England J. of Med. Vol. 316:1315-1319, 05.21.87, J. M. Reade and R. M. Ratzan - Yellow professionalism. Advertising by Physicians in the yellow pages : We found that a mean of 12 percent of "specialists" listed in the yellow pages were not board certified.

J. Med. Ethics, 2006, Jan.;32(1):26-28 : A profession selling out: lamenting the paradigm shift in physician advertising.

The Structure of Scientific Revolution, Thomas Kuhn, 1962: ...fathered , defined and popularized the concept of paradigm shift as a change from one way of thinking to another.....It just doesn't happen, but rather is driven by agents of change.
www.taketheleap.com/define.html

As reported Jan. 13, Tom Daschle (TD) offered this introductory comment at the Jan. 9 U. S. Senate Confirmation Hearing: I think we need to change the paradigm in this country on health. It starts with the big picture belief. The paradigm needs to be changed from illness to health.

We respectfully suggest to TD that a great deal of highly respected professional support will be required to accomplish this shift, and it's high time that it be applied in the best interests of this nation.

Your Narrator Comments

I'm tired of having my RFD Mailbox loaded with junk mail, but this one takes the cake - a 20 page whopper which features Hugh Downs and the "Greatest Medical Team Ever Assembled" and the medical institutions with which they are affiliated. NO! I'll not advertise the books they are touting, but I consider this tasteless YP.

Waste-Not Want-Not for BEST RESULTS

BEST RESULTS require a Carefully Selected Fish Oil, and Wildegeest continues to investigate the "selection" problem. Now in its 3rd year, the "Fish Oil Therapy Project (FOTP)" has confined its testing to a completely natural wild Alaskan Sockeye Salmon Oil, selected because in composition it appears to be almost identical to the fat present in prime quality Wild Alaskan Sockeye Salmon.
http://www.vitalchoice.com/

When FOTP was in its planning stages, our initial reason for selecting this oil was that hundreds of reliable investigations indicated wild red salmon to be among the best finfish sources of the essential long chain omega-3 fatty acids. Some of the problems of selecting other fish oils are described in
http://www.wildegeestfoundation.org/

There are suitable alternatives, if professionally selected by MD's who understand that "All fish oils are not created equal".FOTP has concluded that even the best fish oil requires a shove in the right direction to achieveoptimum biological availability. There are varying opinions, but the following is what we recommend:
1. Swallow the softgels before breakfast with the assistance of fat-free buttermilk,or yogurt (as emulsifying agent).
2. Immediately eat a tablespoon of fresh or cooked fruit and berry mix - It can be chopped up and mixed with the yogurt. Natural Antioxidant Choices : blackberry, cherry, grape, grapefruit, kiwi, pineapple, raspberry, trawberry,and/or dried fruits -apricots, dates, prunes. grapefruit, kiwi.

ARTHRITIS NON-PRESCRIPTION MEDICATIONS NEED FDA APPROVAL

(Over-the counter BARGAIN HUNTERS take heed)

An MD, PhD staff doctor in a famous medical institution asked, "Are all fish equally close to the heart? Is it fair to suggest to our patients that all over-the-counter fish oil preparations have the same cardio protective action?"

Wildegeest poses a similar question, as it applies to Arthritis , the focus of the AIT STUDY conducted by National. Center for Complementary & Alternative Medicine, which resulted in the conclusions expressed in U. of Cal., Berkeley, Wellness etter. Vol. 24, Issue 3, Dec. 2008, & The Johns Hopkins Medical Letter, Health after Fifty, Vol. 20, Issue 12, Feb. 2009.

U. of Cal. :Glucosamine : the news is in. We suggest you forget about glucosamine and chondroitin unless you are willing to pay $20 or $30 or more a month for what is probably a placebo effect. If you already take these supplement and find they help, continue with them, but consider stopping for a while to see if there's a difference.

JHU :A Negative Verdict for Glucosamine and Chondroitin Supplements, But be aware that well-designed trials done by independent of supplement anufacturers have not been able to prove these supplements work, despite their enormous popularity. Moreover, pills can cost more than $30 a month, this is a lot of money to spend on what may be a placebo effect.

But the same government agency that has permitted the unrestricted sale of this
poorly researched G&C Medication, has neglected its obligation to monitor the variable quality of "over the counter FISH OILS", thus placing at risk an important claim supported by peer reviewed research, that Carefully Selected Fish Oil is a valuable Medication for Arthritis.

Fish Oil Therapy - A step in our Healthcare System

(01-13-09)

The Fish Oil Therapy Project (FOTP) objective is to spotlight the unique health and longevity potential of the long chain omega-3 fatty acids supplied by fish, and fish oil supplements. There is urgent need for professional advice on how to achieve optimum benefits, since the average American is seriously deficient in the disease-preventing, health-promoting omega-3 fatty acids from ocean fisheries, as discussed in http://www.wildegeestfoundation.org/

Tom Daschle offered this introductory comment at the January 9 Senate Confirmation Hearing : "I think we need to change the paradigm in this country on health. It starts with that big picture belief. The paradigm needs to be changed from illness to wellness."

American Heritage Dictionary of the American Language, 4th Ed. Defines "Preventative Medicine": "The Prevention, treatment, and management of illness and the preservation of mental and physical well-being through the services offered by the medical and allied health professions."

HARK! Another Senate hearing, Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pension, 12.10.08.
Dr. Don Wright, MD, MPH, presented lengthy report which ended as follows:

"The Department's investment in a comprehensive and growing prevention and communication science base sets the stage for health care reform in which the public should be able to expect seamless, coordinated care and the the best support for making healthy decisions that science has to offer. It is accurate to say that whatever the specifics of future efforts to reform American health care, a consensus exists that the system of the future will be founded upon prevention and recognition of its value.
Put another way, if prevention is the future - and it is - then the future is now."

Suggestion :
Tom Daschle should hire Don Wright as POLICY DIRECTOR.
